Andrew Toney (born November 23, 1957) is an American retired professional basketball player who was a member of the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers from 1980 to 198He was born in New York City and raised in Philadelphia. During the 76ers’ and Celtics’ rivalry in the early 1980s, he was dubbed “The Boston Strangler” by sportswriters in Boston, Massachusetts, because of his ability to single-handedly dominate games against the Celtics, including Game 7 of the 1982 Eastern Conference Finals, in which he scored 34 points in the game. Aside from that, he also scored 30 points in Game 2, 39 points in Game 4, and an overall average of 26.4 points per game in the series.
Toney was selected by the Sixers with the eighth overall selection in the 1980 NBA Draft out of Southwestern Louisiana University (now known as the University of Louisiana at Lafayette). He was selected to two All-Star teams, in 1982 and 1983, and he finished his career with an average of 15.9 points per game. Toney was a key member of the Philadelphia 76ers’ “Fo’ fi’ fo'” championship team in 1982–83, which is widely regarded as one of the greatest teams in NBA history.
He will be remembered as a fan favourite for the rest of his career, alongside players such as Julius Erving, Moses Malone, Bobby Jones, and Maurice Cheeks. When Channing was younger, he played Division I basketball at the University of Alabama in Birmingham. He is currently a professional basketball player in Poland, where he plays for Asseco Prokom Gdynia.
